My name is Izzy Fawson and I just finished my first week as the new Americorps summer associate at Good Cheer! My first day was on a Monday with loads of grocery rescue to sort through; I dove right in and started sorting celery, asparagus, carrots, and lettuce out of gigantic banana boxes. We got the produce sorted and into the store, ready for Good Cheer shoppers to take home.
I worked with Paula who is so sweet and Janet who helped me understand the basics of food processing. Then I ate one of Karen’s masterpiece soups: chili with ground beef!
The day continued with sorting strawberries, some for food processing, some for the compost, some for putting in the store (and some for snacking!) We rounded out the day by sorting pears to go into our delicious pear butter. No day was quite as busy as Monday but on Wednesday I had the pleasure to meet other Americorps associates placed around Washington, all part of the Harvest Against Hunger project. We planted fruit trees and other herbs at Elk Run farm in Maple Valley as part of an Americorps Action Day, but most importantly we all got to meet each other!
We finished out the week with an easygoing Thursday and Friday, and on Saturday we attended the annual pride parade in Langley, a great end to a great week!
