Winter Updates: a Successful MLK Jr Work Party and an Exciting New Job Opportunity

While we wait out frost and snow and rain, we have been preparing for another stellar season.

On January 16th, over 20 volunteers came to help us kick off the season and celebrate the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. The ground was much too frozen to dig, and compost piles were one solid heap so we spent the day cleaning, organizing, and preparing the greenhouse for starts, and the hoop houses for seeds. We also cut back heaps of the invasive blackberries, scotchbroom, and holly around the Big ACRE, and near the fence line at the Good Cheer Garden.

In between freezes we have been harvesting carrots, beets, leeks, kale, and chard for the food bank as well. Our greenhouse is now happily growing beautiful little starts, and in no time we’ll be back out there getting crops in the ground.

Furthermore, we are thrilled to announce that we will be working with the AmeriCorps VISTA program to host a VISTA member at Good Cheer! Are you passionate about local food systems or social justice? Do you love fruit trees and working outside? Do you want to help Good Cheer take gleaning efforts in our community to the next level? If so, please view the position, and submit your application on the AmeriCorps website. Feel free to contact our produce manager, Lissa, at goodcheerfreshfoods@gmail.com with any questions about the position!

Lastly our weekly work parties start on Wednesday, March 1st. As always, we’ll be out there from 9 until 4. We hope to see you there!
